Obama Calls Orlando Shooting An Act Of Terror And Hate
U.S. President Barack Obama says Sunday's mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida is an act of terror and an act of hate. He said the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history was a further reminder of how easy it was for Americans to acquire a deadly weapon. CLIP (0:28) 50 people were killed when a gunman identified as Omar Mateen opened fire at the club. The FBI says that before the shooting he stated his allegiance to the Islamic State militant group in a phone call to emergency services. Mateen's father says he believed his son was motivated by his anti-gay views and not his religion.¡á


The 20th National Assembly will officially kick off today with an opening ceremony. President Park Geun-hye will speak at the session and likely stress the importance of governance between the administration and parliament. Also on the docket today, lawmakers will vote on who will fill the 17 standing committees in the National Assembly. The Saenuri is expected to head eight of the committees including those for legislation, state affairs, planning, science, and safety. The Minjoo is to chair eight committees including transportation, foreign affairs and ethics. Ahead of this, Minjoo Representative Kim Hyun-mi has been nominated as the first woman to head the parliamentary budget committee.¡á




The People's Party is launching a fact-finding committee to look into claims of corruption by one of its members. The team, lead by Lee Sang-don (ÀÌ»óµ·, will be formed today and composed of party members with legal backgrounds. They will be tasked with probing allegations surrounding Kim Soo-min who was elected as a proportional representative in the April general election. She is suspected of granting business contracts to advertising and printing firms during her campaign in return for rebates worth 178 million won. They are also expected to review other party representatives facing similar accusations of election law violations.¡á




Joel Wit, a former U.S. State Department negotiator with Pyongyang, says President Obama's policy on the North has failed to achieve progress towards its objectives. In a recent policy suggestion report, Wit said a new approach is needed to curb North Korea's nuclear and missile capabilities. He argued that America's current course of pressure and isolation will only make the situation worse, leading to more provocations and greater instability on the peninsula. Wit suggests in addition to pressure, the U.S. should make clear that it is prepared to engage in talks on a peace treaty that can replace the armistice, in exchange for North Korea giving up its nuclear program.¡á

Taking a look at the weather, many areas remain affected by thick fog on this Monday morning. Especially down south on Jeju Island, where visibility is so low that flights are being affected. Conditions are expected to clear as the day progresses with more sun in store nationwide. Expect another hot, balmy day with temperatures rising to the high 20s to low 30s. Be aware, ozone levels will also be high in Gyeonggi, Chungcheong and the Jeolla Provinces. As for the current temperature in downtown Seoul, it is 21 degrees Celsius, or 70 degrees in Fahrenheit.¡á
